Christians have been leaving local churches in mass. But not necessarily because they have lost their faith in Jesus. The response to plummeting numbers from within the Church has been countless “how to” books, on-line articles, and podcasts on making the Church more attractive to Gen-Xers and Millennials. What Leaving the Church to Follow Jesus is not, is another book on how to fix the Church.
Leaving the Church to follow Jesus, makes the biblical argument that the (capital C or “Universal”) Church, is a counterfeit of what Jesus has been building, where He currently dwells, in Heaven, and that He would not recognize, or appreciate, most of what takes place today in local assemblies of Christians. To demonstrate this, author Doug Hooley conducts a New Testament survey of scriptures that directly only pertain to the purpose and function of groups of authentic believers who gather in the name of Jesus. Then, since those scriptures indicate something drastically different than what exists today in the form of local churches, Doug provides a detailed “warts and all” historical accounting of how the Church got here. The book ends with what can be learned from a fresh look at scripture and Church history and applied to these uncertain times we are living in. This solution offered, not by adhering to beloved traditions or attempting to go back to doing things the way they did things in the first-century lands of the Bible, but through applying the enduring principles set out in the New Testament for the Called-Out people of Jesus when they gather.
If you are a Christian but have sensed there is something not right with the Church— this book is for you. If you have ever felt guilty about considering leaving your church, or if you no longer have time for cultural and traditional religion but yearn to simply follow Jesus— this book is for you!
